Dr. Pepper's "Not For Women." Not Now...

Dr. Pepper recently came out with a campaign called "It's not for women." These advertisements have sparked quite the debate on social stereotypes in advertisements. The company says that it's reasons for the campaign stemmed from a report that men were less likely to drink Dr. Pepper's lower calorie drinks because they were too feminine. Though their research is understandable, did they handle the situation properly? Judge for yourself...

Dr. Pepper may have gotten their target men's attention, but was it really worth it to alienate their female consumers? I may be biased as a woman, but I think they've just hurt rather than helped themselves. Many women have been very offended and may boycott Dr. Pepper all together. Some are calling Dr. Pepper sexist. I can seen how it raises awareness and draws attention to their product but it's not the smartest move on Dr. Peppers part.

Relatable Advertising (with a sense of humor)

This is one of my all time favorite ads! I love Walmart's approach to making ads. They always use something very comical that the average person could say "Oh I could see my kids doing that" or "Oh I remember smothering lotion on my dad's face while he was sleeping" to.  It's extremely relateable to the public in general and, if that's not enough for you, its very funny too! I encourage everyone to look up their campaign on Youtube, I laugh when I watch almost every commercial. The only problem with their ads is that there is no call to action in them. Which, in their case of being a big grocery and more kinda of store, is not something they REALLY need. All they want is to leave an impact so that the next time you need groceries, you'll think of them. I think their ads effectively accomplish that!

(Sorry the video quality isn't great)

Colorful & "Moving"

This, as my sister Katie brought to my attention, is a fantastic ad. It draws a lot of attention with its use of bright colors and movement. It grabs you immediately and you want to find out what is going on. There is so much movement and the music organizes the images you see, while giving the commercial a child like fantasy feel. This is a commercial that not only calls you to action with its "Color Changes Everything" campaign but it sets Target apart from others by having a commercial that is easy to recall. It's "moving" in that it has a call to action and draws your attention with movement, two things I love in an ad! It's a very different approach and you can't help but to pay attention!

My Top 5 Super Bowl Ads

The Super Bowl is football's BIG day but, it's Advertising's BIG event! Brands will pay big bucks to get their 30 second commercial spot. Lets see who got the most bang for their buck!

#5 Doritos commercial - You Didn't See Nuthin'
This commercial was comical, but not the best Doritos commercial I've seen. Still the dog was cute and it brings you back to the old dog chases cat scenario. Which is funny and appealing to pet lovers and haters alike.

#4 Hyundai- Cheetah vs. Car
This commercial was great because it caught you off guard. The average person watching this would think at the beginning "oh, another car commercial trying to prove their cars are the fastest". That was not the case in this one. They added in a comical twist that not only made fun of competitors, but also made their brand stick.

#3 Bud Light - Here wego.
This commercial was appealing to males of all age and comical to women. Who wouldn't want a dog that would fetch them a beer? This is going back to the basics of advertising. Find a problem, give a solution, however unrealistic that solution may be, and you've got buyers.

#2 Chrysler commercial featuring Clint Eastwood
This is unconventional ad for the Super Bowl but I don't know a person who didn't like it. It's not funny, pushy, or loud. It's a brand that is making it's product (and it's problem) relatable. Therefore it made it into my top 5.

#1 The Voice featuring Betty White
This commercial was brilliant. There was action, excitement, and of course Betty White! I don't think audiences will ever get sick of her. This commercial was so funny that it conquered all the Super Bowl commercials for me this year!

Hello.

I thought I'd start my very first post introducing myself and explaining what my blog is all about. My name is MacKenzie Baker, but call me Kenzie. I am an advertising student at Michigan State University. I'm currently a junior, but with a specialization in PR, I'm suspecting it will take a total of 5 years to complete my degree. I LOVE advertising and I cannot get enough of the creativity involved! I started this blog to critic ads on all sources of media. I believe that in order to have deemed your work as a successful campaign, you need to get people on their feet, you need to have a call to action. In other words, your work needs to create an event of some kind, hence the name AdEvent for this blog. I hope to inspire other students and the public fascinated in this area of work, and to change the way people approach an ad. Feel free to comment whether you agree or disagree, I'm always open to new ideas. I'm no expert, but I'm enthusiastic about advertising!
